Nanaimo
Harbour

One of Canada's most beautiful harbour cities, Nanaimo is the
second largest city on British Columbia's Vancouver Island with a population of over
70,000 people. Located in the Central southeast section of the island, Nanaimo is
considered to be the island's urban center. Only Victoria, located on the island's
southern tip, is larger in population.
Asian Communities in the region.
In Nanaimo, Chinese immigrants established a community in 1906 which existed until 1960
when it was entirely destroyed by fire. A large ship building factory was established in
1911 by the Japanese on Newcastle Island along with herring salteries and a cannery.
Nanaimo Boat Basin

The city with its two harbours is the only port on Vancouver
Island with facilities to service commercial and recreational users. The area is a great
attraction to water sports enthusiasts for sailing, kayaking, fishing and diving. |
